Sleep and health

Sleep and health

Physiologically: Sleep helps cell repair and muscle development. Good sleep also helps regulate hormones that control appetite and stress, thus reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Psychologically: Sleep helps regulate mood and reduces the risk of depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders.

Cognitively: Sleep optimizes memorization, learning capacity and concentration. Numerous studies link sleep to school and academic performance.

Canada's 24-hour sleep guidelines recommend 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep for adults aged 18 to 64, and 7 to 8 hours for adults aged 65 and over. Children 18 and under may need up to 11 hours of sleep per night!
